Happy Independence Day

This is my first 4th of July spent away from my parents.  It took me a long time to figure out how to make it feel like a holiday without all their decorations and big gatherings of people.  I tried to think of American things to do.  All I could come up with was

to buy a very inexpensive swimming pool ($7) for my daughter to swim in the backyard in and some sidewalk chalk.  She had a great time swimming!  Using our new chalk, we tried to draw as many American things as we could come up with.   We got a flag of course, an apple pie, a Ford truck, some stars, the moon with our flag on it, the statue of liberty, and eagle that looked much closer to a chicken, a space shuttle, baseball, and a few other borderline American things.

We got $2 worth of fireworks that buzzed and changed colors without leaving the ground. It's a good thing they didn't do anything else because my kid could barely handle that!

All in all, I think it was a success.

What did you guys do?

I did the exact same thing, plus I went fishing in the morning. I caught six fish.

I went to visit an old friend in Germany who took me to the military base where I actually had American BBQ. 'twas sheer and utter bliss.

Sounds like you had a good time. I made a cake, then decorated it with strawberries and blueberries so that it resembled the American flag. We all ate a piece, and it was amazing, if I say so myself.
