Hey Mr. DJ!

Last night I DJed the YSA dance. I spent three hours planning out my playlist. Creating such a playlist is a delicate process, much like making a crush a mixed tape back when you were in middle school. After all, you are essentially catering to a hundred people with a hundred different tastes and expectations.

There is a song by Rick Nelson called Garden Party. In it, he posits that "you can't please everyone / so you've got to please yourself." That line rings true to my ears. My DJing had mixed reviews.

I had a handfull of people tell me that my choices were less than stellar. Everyother song they would look at me and roll their eyes to convey to me how blazé my pick was. Or they would walk up and proclaim, "this song sucks."

I had another handfull of excellent people inform me that my taste was spot on and could not have been better. These were fine people indeed. Clearly, theirs is a superior and refined musical palate.

But neither of those really matter in the end. My guiding light when it came to choosing songs was simple: if people were dancing, it was a good song; if people were not dancing, it was time to change songs. Thankfully, I only had to change songs twice. I am a strong believer in people dancing at dances. If they are not dancing, then something is wrong. By and large, people danced and danced and danced.

Note: In choosing songs, I faced a conundrum. Many popular dance songs are inappropriate for church dances. Yet some of them are sooooo dancable that I had issues with putting in questionable songs. Now, clearly a song with a profane word cannot be tolerated, but what if that word is edited out? Sometimes it is still bad. The worst offender I played was probably M.I.A. - Paper Planes. I really love that song. I had Trooper edit two words out of it for me, and the YSA in the Austin area danced their hearts out to it.

I took my now 2 month old daughter to the pediatrician the other day to get her first shots.  At the end of the visit the Dr. asked if I had any questions or concerns.  I mentioned that Ryleigh (my daughter) feels like she's falling every time I lay her flat.  (I know this because she throws her hands in the air and tries to grab on to something-  if nothing is within reach she screams like crazy)  I knew that this reflex (known as the moro reflex) was normal and they grow out of it.  My question was how much longer will she be scared like this.

The pediatrician said, "Let me find out for you."  She turned to her computer...

Just wondering...

An Historic Election

by: Abinadi Ayerdis | on: 2008-11-06 13:05:42

Obama is now the President-Elect. I know that some are elated and some are disappointed. What do the next four years hold in store for us? Obama is inheriting an America that has some big problems. Will he make things better or worse? Is all lost? Should we give up hope? (haha, pun intended)

In the words of Rudy Giuliani, "change is not a destination just as hope is not a strategy." So, pray tell, what lies in store for we, the proletariat?
